As a result of Winston’s fear he harbored against the party, Winston’s natural reaction was to rid himself of the excitement that he felt by destroying the evidence. Winston reassesses this action and decides to spare the note. Winston does not do this simply out of lust, but also out of his belief that the girl is not what he originally believed. The girl committed an action that was not permissible by the party. To Winston this demonstrated that she was not as subject to the rules of the party. Using this as his base, Winston could infer that she was not a spy or an agent of the thought police. Perhaps she was not as chaste as she appeared.
