1984 chapers 2-3

"You're a traitor!" yelled the boy. "You're a thought-criminal! You're a Eurasian spy! I'll shoot you, I'll vaporize you, I'll send you to the salt mines!" (23).

This quote bears an infinite significance to the story in two main ways. The first way is the demonstration of how children are being raised in this utopian society. This bitter and unprovoked outburst of hatred is characterised as common by Winston (such as the children missing the "hanging"). The second second main significant of this quote is its possible foreshadow. The boy first acknowledges Winston as a traitor, which Winston realizes himself to be during the two minute hate. The boy then calls Winston a thought criminal which Winston addresses himself as when he writes in his diary. Perhaps becoming a zealot and capitalizing on his hatred for Big Brother will result in becoming a Eurasian spy, being shot, and being send to the salt mines.

Drudges(22)- unpleasant or menial work

Furtive(34) - characterized by stealth
